Global Experiences

The field of pharmacy knows no borders. International experiences help students at the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to excel as global healthcare professionals. The school offers a range of opportunities to gain valuable overseas experience. Many are offered through the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation, while others are organized by the Office of Global Initiatives.

International APPEs

PharmD students in their P4 year can choose an International Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience to fulfill an elective rotation. In collaboration with the Professional Experience Programs office, the Office of Global Initiatives is building upon existing partnerships to expand the number and diversity of destinations open to students for APPEs. Recent destinations have included the Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, National Taiwan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Taipei Medical University, the Children’s Cancer Hospital of Egypt, Sookmyung Women’s University (South Korea), and the Balkans. Anticipated new destinations include sites in India, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Global Pharmacy Experiences

Students may also take advantage of short-term international opportunities. Global Pharmacy Experiences are typically two-week programs that introduce participants to pharmacy education and practice in the host country through visits to pharmaceutical companies, universities, hospitals, clinics, professional associations and community pharmacies.

Recent Global Pharmacy Experience sites have included:

  • Bulgaria
  • University of Toyama (Japan)
  • Universidad del Atlántico (Colombia)
  • China Pharmaceutical University (Nanjing, China)
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Sookmyung Women’s University (Seoul, South Korea)

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduates in USC Mann majors and minors may choose from the range of study-abroad options open to all USC undergraduates. In addition, USC Mann offers faculty-led Maymester programs specific to pharmacy. In May 2022 and 2023, Dr. Terry Church led programs in the Balkans. In 2024, the program will visit Italy and the Balkans.
