Contraception for Pharmacists

This online course was developed in response to California Assembly Bill 1114 that allows pharmacists to bill Medi-Cal for furnishing hormonal contraception and providing counseling on safe and effective contraception as authorized in Section 4052.9 of the Business and Professions Code.

Target Audience: Pharmacists interested in developing expertise in self-administered hormonal contraception

Goals: To provide pharmacists with the knowledge and skills needed to function as a reimbursable provider of self-administered hormonal contraception

Credit: Earn 2.5 hours of continuing education credit

Program Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1) Differentiate between the different forms of hormonal contraception available
2) Interpret California’s 2016 legislation that expands the pharmacist’s role in providing patients with self-administered hormonal contraception (SAHC)
3) Compare SAHC products with regard to efficacy, tolerability, dosing, monitoring requirements and cost
4) Given a patient case, select optimal hormonal contraception that accounts for age, medical conditions, drug interactions and cost
5) Given a patient case, provide education on the safe and effective use of SAHC
