Laila Khoury-Chamoun (USC PharmD ’93), executive director of oncology global medical communications at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, explains why she volunteers as a preceptor to mentor USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences students and introduce them to “real world” experiences.
Why did you choose to become a preceptor for USC Mann students?
I am a proud alumnus (PharmD class of 1996).
How do preceptors play a vital role in preparing students for future jobs in the healthcare industry?
Preceptors can be role models to students as they begin their careers. They can also inspire students to consider various areas within the pharmacy sectors.
What do you enjoy most about being a preceptor?
I really enjoy teaching and helping the students get a glimpse of what being a pharmacist in industry is like. I also enjoy seeing how much they have learned in such a short time and watching them explore different paths.
What advice do you have for current PharmD students?
Network as much as you can, ask as many questions as you can think of, and use every opportunity to learn even if you fail.
Why should other pharmacists consider being a preceptor for the school?
Being a preceptor is very rewarding, professionally. I love the fact that I have contributed to preparing future pharmacists who will be our fellow healthcare professionals. It also has a benefit of meeting some very bright students that you could potentially recruit for future positions.
