Dana P. Goldman, director of the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics, and Daniel McFadden, USC Presidential Professor of Health Economics at the Schaeffer Center, along with Adam Leive from the University of Pennsylvania, co-authored a piece in the New York Times Economix Blog posted on October 16.

In the article entitled, “Why Private Medicare Plans Don’t Cost Less,” the authors take a close look at how regulatory and political forces have impacted the ability (or inability) of Medicare Advantage to reach its goal of increasing choices for beneficiaries while controlling costs. By doing so, the authors provide timely insight to the national conversation around the present and future roles of private insurance companies in Medicare.
