Diabetes Care
Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot effectively process sugars from food. Long-term complications of diabetes include kidney disease, eye problems and decreased sensation in the arms and legs. These complications can eventually lead to other serious medical problems and even death. Early detection of diabetes can help patients control their sugar levels before it's too late.
The Pharmacies at USC offer all levels of care including screenings, full medication therapy management and the Diabetes Ten City Challenge for our USC Network patients.
Get your blood sugar checked today. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, ask your pharmacist about USC Pharmacy management programs.
Blood Pressure Screening
Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the pressure of the blood flowing through your arteries is abnormally high. The increased pressure puts extra stress on vital organs and can lead to kidney failure, stroke, eye problems, heart attacks or heart failure if left untreated. Hypertension is a very common disease in persons over the age of 50 and is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
To assess if you are at risk for hypertension, get your blood pressure taken today. If you have hypertension, ask your pharmacist about management programs at USC Pharmacy.
Immunizations
The USC Pharmacies offer a variety of vaccines including:
- Flu (injectable and nasal)
- Meningitis
- Pneumonia
- Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
- Tetanus Booster
- Shingles
Ask your pharmacist today which vaccine is right for you.
Tuberculosis Management
Latent tuberculosis (TB) is a disease which affects your lungs. It is easily spread from person to person in the air and can be very harmful if you develop “active TB.” If your skin test was TB positive, it is likely that your doctor will have you take a medication to help prevent you from developing “active” TB in the future. The Pharmacies at USC can help you understand the risks and benefits of taking this medication.
Ask your pharmacist today.
Osteoporosis Screening
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. Early detection of the strength of your bones (bone mineral density) can help to prevent future bone fractures.
Get your bone density checked today.
Anticoagulation Management
Anticoagulants, such as warfarin, are given to help prevent abnormal blood clotting (thrombosis) in blood vessels. Generally, anticoagulation therapy is used to treat patients with deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, or prosthetic heart valves. Close monitoring of patients taking warfarin is important since the medication can be affected by other medications, vitamin K- enriched foods, herbals or over-the-counter products. Clinical pharmacists are available to help patients manage their anticoagulation therapy.
Please make an appointment by calling (323) 442-5882.
Cholesterol Screening
High cholesterol is a significant problem in the United States today. Many people who have high cholesterol are not even aware of it! High cholesterol increases your risk for diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Everyone over the age of 20 should get their cholesterol checked at least once every five years.
Have you checked your cholesterol lately?
